What exactly is granola?
Most of us have probably heard the term granola before. A granola is nothing more than a homemade crunchy muesli. Today, granola is considered a particularly healthy power breakfast. It was invented by James Caleb Jackson, an American sanatorium operator who wanted to serve his patients a healthy and tasty breakfast. In the USA, granola has long been a popular and high-calorie breakfast.
The typical American crunchy muesli consists of baked oat flakes with plenty of sugar and honey. Of course, there are also healthy versions of granola. You can also easily make the crunchy muesli yourself.
How do you get the crunch in the crunchy muesli?
The crunch of granola comes primarily from the adhesive. Honey, agave syrup or maple syrup can be used here. Then you need an oily component. Coconut oil tastes particularly good. To make the whole thing nice and crispy, the oat flakes are put in the oven. To do this, mix the dry ingredients with coconut oil, nuts, seeds and a sweetener such as agave syrup. Then spread on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
The more gently the mixture is baked, the crispier it will be. A temperature of 180 degrees for 15 minutes with top and bottom heat is ideal. If you want the result to be as even as possible, you should turn the granola occasionally. Now let the baked oats cool. You can store the granola for several weeks if you seal it airtight.
How healthy is granola?
How healthy your granola is depends, of course, on how it is made. Whether it's a ready-made muesli or homemade, if it contains a lot of sugar, the granola is anything but healthy and a real calorie bomb. Ideally, the manufacturer is certified organic and avoids any additives. There are certainly manufacturers who use natural sweeteners, such as dates or maple syrup.
A healthy breakfast should not be prepared with oil and too much sugar. It's better to combine the granola with a sweet fruit afterwards. Fresh berries and chia seeds are also great toppings. Berries like blueberries contain a lot of antioxidants and provide you with sufficient vitamins. They contain relatively little fructose and keep your blood sugar level constant. Find a granola without palm oil
Make sure that your granola is made without palm oil. Palm oil is very high in fat and unhealthy because it consists of unsaturated fatty acids. Large amounts of unsaturated fatty acids can lead to hardening of the arteries and increase your cholesterol level.
