With the seasonal calendar, you have a clear overview of when you can use which fruit as a topping for your porridge ! By buying only seasonal and regional fruits, you save on transport costs, contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and support the cultivation of local fruit varieties! When is the best time to buy which fruits and vegetables? Here's what you'll learn in this post!
Of course, it is clear to us that no one wants to do without exotic fruits such as lemons and oranges. However, for ecological reasons alone, it makes sense to know when the great variety of local fruits can be harvested! Even those who do not have their own garden and cannot therefore grow fruit and vegetables should be aware of when different fruits are in season. And they should only buy at this time! 🙂
Why are seasonal foods better?
In the meantime, you can buy any type of fruit and vegetable in the supermarket all year round – strawberries in December and pumpkins in August. And as good and delicious as everything sounds, our environment suffers.
Long transport routes destroy our climate through emissions, and we become completely dependent on imports. In addition, fruits lose not only their taste but also their vitamins due to the lengthy transport routes!
That's why you should opt for seasonal vegetables and fruits as much as possible when buying. This means knowing which foods are currently in season in your region, so always remember: regional and seasonal nutrition are inseparable!
Benefits of eating with the season
Not only for the environment but also for yourself and your community, a seasonal and regional diet brings many benefits. We've summarized them for you:
-
Plate variety:
When you eat seasonally, you introduce a variety of fruits and vegetables to your plate. Your body will thank you for the supply of different vitamins!
-
More seasonal vegetables – save more money:
You'll shop more affordably if you buy your groceries at the right time!
-
Support for smallholder farmers:
If you pay attention to seasonality and regionality, you gain clear visibility – by buying from smallholder farmers with their own farms, you understand where your food comes from!
-
Good for health:
Seasonal and regional vegetables are the healthiest! This is because foods that are grown out of season contain much larger amounts of fertilizer and pesticide residues.
